One of the questions I am assuming people are wondering is why choose birth photography? I can guess as to why it might be important to you, however I thought could go to the source to get some information. I asked past clients the following questions. Here are the answers that might help you decide if birth photography is a good fit for you.

Why should someone consider hiring a birth photographer? Why did you do it?
I wanted to capture the moments of the day, just like a wedding photographer a birth photographer catches the expressions of people candidly during the birth journey.  While laboring its difficult to notice anything else that is going on around you, little things that are going on, capturing the amazement and joy on others faces.  Like that picture of [my husband’s] face as baby’s head began to show (one of my favorites!)  After seeing the pictures you did for another mom and being brought to tears looking at photos of someone I didn’t even know I knew you’d capture our birth just as beautifully so I had to do it.

Were you glad you did it?
ABSOLUTELY!!!  I’m so thankful to have the pictures and even now sometimes I get teary looking through them.

Anything else you think would be helpful for perspective clients to know?
You’re so quiet and you just know what to capture while the birth is taking place.  I was surprised by some of the pictures because I didn’t even remember them being taken.  When I called you to come to the birth you were the most calming and reassuring person I talked to.  All it took was you telling me to just breathe and that it would be O.K. and that made me feel so much better. Shortly after the midwife arrived, but just hearing those simple words was just the little reassurance I needed.  Not only do your clients get an amazing photographer they will hopefully walk away with someone they’d consider to be a friend.

Why should someone consider hiring a birth photographer? Why did you do it?
I hired a birth photographer because it was important to me to have photographs captured of my babies birth. In my family I am usually the one snapping away on my camera, and I knew my husband didn’t want the pressure of having to get the images I’d want. It was so nice to be able to not have to think about that aspect and know that you were there to do just that and take the documentation role away from my husband and I so we could both just be there in the moment.

Were you glad you did it?
YES! Very glad! My husband was a little hesitant at first hiring someone, as it’s not like we were going to share these photos with everyone, they were mainly just for us. But now that it’s said and done he says he is very happy we had a photographer there as he couldn’t even imagine having to be getting ‘real’ photos (other than our phone photos) of the moment. He also says you were a big help to him during labor, almost acting as a doula and offering support to him. He was very grateful for your presence. We also didn’t even know you were there during the pushing/delivery process.

Anything else you think would be helpful for perspective clients to know?
Not really anything that I can think of. Just that we are very grateful for these images and although it is a very private intimate event, I’m glad i have those photos to go back and look through just for my personal reflection as well as some, not all 🙂 that I am able to share with friends and family.

Why should someone consider hiring a birth photographer? Why did you do it?
I wanted a birth photographer for a number of reasons; this was going to be an intense experience that I knew I would not remember all of the details from, but it would also be something to share with my family members as well as with my child when we discussed his birth story. It was important to me on a personal level as well, to have these moments in my life documented.

Were you glad you did it?
I could not have been happier with my decision to have a birth photographer; I was blessed to have had Megan there, who not only captured these intimate images, but was an integral part of my support network/birthing team.

While this is an incredibly intense, intimate time, having the right birth photographer is key. Do your research, make sure to meet them before hand—you want someone that seamlessly fits into “your” environment, whatever and wherever that is. You, and they should feel comfortable together–it is an exciting experience to be sharing with one another!

Why should someone consider hiring a birth photographer? Why did you do it?
I think photography captures the real essence of the moment as to where video with sound can detract from the actual experience with too much stimuli. When a woman has transcended the moment from where her life will never be the same and for that instantaneous moment when she realizes such is captured on film is breathtaking and a moment she will cherish forever.

Were you glad you did it?
Absolutely! For me to be captured when I am at my most powerful?! How many opportunities does one have to be able to encapsulate the rawness and beauty of birth! To capture my first meeting with the soul that will own my heart like no one has before.

If you are nervous or shy about being filmed during a birth..Don’t fret! you’ll soon forget everything outside of this keyhole vision you’ll soon possess.Any doubt you may have about hiring a photographer will soon be a distant memory after the birth when you are able to relive and process what you have just accomplished.

Why should someone consider hiring a birth photographer? Why did you do it?
There are so many intricacies that happens throughout the birth process.  I wanted to capture those most precious moments with my husband, one of the most important moments of our lives, from a different vantage point.  I knew Megan would help us create those memories through photos, something to look back on for a lifetime.

Were you glad you did it?
Most definitely!  I look back at those photos and it floods my heart with the same emotions of that day.  A birth is an amazing miracle and I am so glad to be able to share those moments with my friends and family, and later on with my child.

Anything else you think would be helpful for perspective clients to know?
Know that Megan has a perfect balance of being present when appropriate, but being able to fade into the background during the birthing experience.  She is respectful while capturing everything we wanted.
