This family had quite the special delivery when one of their twins was born in a different year than the other. Talk about a New Year’s surprise! It was a sheer joy to meet & photograph this family. Can’t wait to blog more of the beautiful images from this session!

One of the best notes I have received from a client was the one from the mom of these twins telling me they were finally home just a few short weeks after baby Anna had open heart surgery. She looked great at the shoot. It was wonderful to see them together again.

And can I just say this mom had so much patience? These two were not on the same schedule and pretty much tag-teamed sleeping and waking. However with help from their mom, we were finally able to get both of them to sleep at the same time and captured some sweet sisterly images.

These little girls where to be my first newborn twin session. I was excited that I would get to travel at the end of January to their home to take pictures with them and their older sister. However their entrance was a little early and they both needed to spend time in the NICU. In situations like this I offer parents complimentary NICU sessions to help document their newborns journey. The girls were a a couple weeks old when I went to see them in the hospital.  Megan is the younger, larger twin in the pink onesie. Her older sister Anna is small & wearing a brown onesie.

By the end of the shoot is was apparent to me that Anna was quite a bit more fragile. After returning home I receive an email from their mom saying that Anna would be needing open heart surgery the next week. Anna’s surgery went well and about a week later I visited again. Megan has already been discharged and Anna was looking stronger. I could see that she was tracking movement better. While I was there she hung out with her mom while Megan took a snooze in her dad’s arms.

Looking forward to getting to do their newborn shoot once Anna is out of the hospital!

Just weeks ago his mama was in getting maternity photos done. And now baby Beckett is here enthusiastically greeted by his older sister! Beckett’s a little older newborn (about 4 weeks) and therefore was bright and alert during our session. Here is a sneak peek our morning together –

Just a week previous I was there watching as this sweet little girl was born. . . amazingly calm and peaceful. And when I came back, there she was again, so calm and peaceful. I am not sure she even woke up at all during our session! If she did. she was back to sleep in no time. . .

Congratulations to these beautiful and proud parents! I imagine your holiday was extra special this year.

It is so nice to have an excuse to come back to see a baby you watched be born. When I saw baby M this morning, I could see changes. He didn’t have a smushed face any more; it had rounded out – taken its form. He was a really low-key guy the whole time I was there. And did I saw cute?!?! I will let you judge for yourself. . .

Here are a few pictures from a session I had with an old college friend. He and his wife had their first at the end of August – a boy. He was such a little peanut. . .so adorable. He was great as sleeping yet made the cutest faces when awake. It was a nice way to spend a lazy, rainy weekend afternoon.

I am editing a newborn session I had over the weekend and am struck yet again by how different it is to edit these pictures. I strive for a “natural” look;  I don’t want the baby to look “over-processed”. However labor, the elements, hormones and those sharp little infant nails are not kind to baby’s skin. I find babies often need quite a bit of work to give them the look we expect of a newborn – fresh, smooth, dewy, new. . .

I thought I would post a few before & after examples to illustrate what goes into editing newborn pictures.

This little guy is totally cute and a champ at sleeping while I posed him. He was a little older (almost 3 weeks) and had some acne and flaky skin that needed to be addressed. I was able to smooth his skin, getting rid of the flaky quality as well as removing the couple of scratches he had and the acne on his nose.

I find with newborns there tends to be more uneven skin tone/color. Here, this guy had a yellow cast to his skin in the “T” zone while around that was more magenta. I evened this out for the final product.

Sometimes I am so focused on the baby I miss things, like the blanket being wrinkled! Luckily this can be fixed as well. BTW – I knit this hat. Isn’t it cute? I must make another!
